Please note that the film Nona. If They Soak Me, I'll Burn Them, will no longer be part of the Singular Screens programming for SIFA 2019.
We understand that the film has exceeded the IMDA Film Classification Guidelines. As SIFA screens films in their entirety, we have decided to withdraw it from the line up.
After a torrid act of vengeance on the home of her ex-lover, 66-year old Nona flees to her summer house in Pichilemu, a Chilean coastal town. There she potters about in apparent satisfaction, until a series of forest fires drives many of her neighbours from their homes.
The formerly quiet shady streets are imbued with fear. The police investigation turns up nothing and the residents grow increasingly speculative about the possible cause. Remarkably enough, Nona's small home is undamaged. Whilst more and more houses go up in flames, this intriguing protagonist displays the different sides of her character: Nona the grandmother, Nona the friend, Nona the anarchist, Nona the storyteller, joker, liar - and Nona the firebrand.
Singular Screens, the film programme curated by the Asian Film Archive (AFA) for Singapore International Festival of Arts 2019 (SIFA), features an international selection of Singapore premieres celebrating independent and singular visions from Singapore and around the world. Valuing the ingenious and the risk-taking in cinema, Singular Screens is diverse in representation and bold in putting together its palette of cinematic adventures. Screenings will be held at the Screening Room at SIFA’s Festival House and Oldham Theatre.
