The nation’s arts festival is indebted to a long line of Festival Directors whose creative forces has nurtured the Festival’s vibrancy since its birth over four decades ago.
It has since evolved from a showcase of regional arts back in 1977 to become our city’s pinnacle performing arts event – showcasing the best of Singapore and the world.
2020 marks a new milestone with the culmination of Festival Director Gaurav Kripalani’s three-year term. Right from the onset, Gaurav’s ambitions were clear: to curate performances for diverse communities and to propel SIFA as a global destination to watch for game-changing artistic work. His approach has had an exponential ripple effect, both widening and deepening SIFA’s reach on a local and international level.
This May, some of the world’s most game-changing artists will once again descend in Singapore for the 43rd edition of SIFA. Whether you’re an arts enthusiast with us from the start or coming to SIFA for the first time, these 17 days will offer inspiration and platform for life-long memories.
It has been a privilege to deliver this festival as organisers for the past seven years. We are proud to deliver a Festival that contributes to the cultural and intellectual life of our city. With The Arts House being transformed into Festival House as our epicentre, audiences can engage with the realities of our world through talks, workshops and post-show events. SIFA 2020 will also turn the spotlight to one of today’s most pressing issues – climate change – with landmark productions As The World Tipped, and The Year of No Return by Singaporean company, The Necessary Stage.
It has been an absolute pleasure working with Gaurav to lead the festival from strength to strength and I would like to thank him for his vision and dedication. My gratitude also goes out to our wonderful team at Arts House Limited, our Board, the commissioners, the National Arts Council and all our partners who have made SIFA possible.
I invite you audiences past and present – to continue journeying with us now and for our future evolutions of SIFA.
